Katherine Smith (right) and an unidentified companion wave the first airmail flag at United Airport. On November 17, 1929, the first airmail flight departed from United Airport carrying 5,300 letters—344 pounds of mail. Smith, who came to work at United Airport in 1930 for Tom Hamilton and the Hamilton Aero Manufacturing Company, worked the switchboard, signaled planes for landing, learned to fly from famous stunt pilot Paul Mantz, and befriended Amelia Earhart, who gave her motorcycle rides around United Airport. In the photograph below, snow covers United Air Terminal. Within one month, Burbank was blasted with two heavy snowstorms—one on December 14, 1931, and another on January 15, 1932.
